Now, with Firefox version 24.0 we have yet another issue. With the Google Toolbar Add-On extension installed and enabled, you can no longer open a new tab in Firefox. You can open a second instance of Firefox, but when you click on the New Tab button (the + sign) or press Ctl-T nothing happens. Oddly, if you disable the Google Toolbar for Firefox extension, then suddenly all of your new tabs you previously requested suddenly appear.
The only work-around found so far is to press the CTRL key as you click a link or right-click a link and choose, "Open Link in New Tab". Once the new Tab is open, then use that tab for what you need. Another possibility is to downgrade to Firefox version 23.
Another tip. Type about:blank in the address bar, hit enter, which gives you a blank page, and then save that in the Bookmarks Toolbar, now you have a quicker way to right-click on a link to give you a new Tab to work with.
Update (10/2/2013)
Many thanks to John Tombs who alerted me to a fix (workaround) to this issue.
In a post on this forum: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/967747#answer-485381 a user called WhopperCock said:
"Type about:config into your browser, then type browser.newtab.preload into the long search bar that appears, then set the Value to False, restart browser and it should be working fine just like it did for me."This worked perfectly for me. Hope it will help others as well. And thank you WhopperCock, whomever you are, for posting the fix.
There's a working fix at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/967747 . Search "browser.newtab.preload".
ReplyDeleteJohn, thank you very very much. I found that thread before creating this post but the "fix" had not yet been posted. Setting the browser.newtab.preload to false worked like a charm. I will update my blog post soon to highlight this fix. So happy to have this working. Again, thank you.
DeleteThanks David! I was just taking a look around google searching for a solution for this, and i found your site. Now google toolbar is fully working again. :)
ReplyDeleteHey David, an avid fan of google toolbar on firefox here, got myself a new system and would like to have Firefox with Google Toolbar in it.
ReplyDeleteBut when I went back to your blog in how to install Google Toolbar in Firefox it seems Filehippo doesn't keep a copy of the old Google Toolbar installer anymore.
Do you by any chance know a place where I can download that said installer?
I just now went to FileHippo.com and on the Firefox page (http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/) on the right-side at the bottom of the list is a "View More" link that shows version all the way back to version 1. Here is the link to version 4.0: http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/9506/
DeleteGood Luck!
Oh!
DeleteYou must have misunderstood, I have no problem whatsoever downloading any of the firefox versions.
What I'm looking for is the installer for the Goolge Toolbar for Firefox.
Like Darren I'm also searching for the installer for the Google Toolbar for Firefox. It used to be on Filehippo, but that page now gives a 404.
DeleteDarren, Daniel,
DeleteDownload from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6T7nu3IrV3_OFliY0ZIMWRWNGM/edit?usp=sharing
This has the whole "toolbar.xpi" file and the "install.rdf" fix to version 40.0. All you need to do is take the whole "{3112ca9c.....} folder and copy it your "extensions" folder under your Mozilla profile folder. The path should be something like this "C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\oo3kzavu.default\extensions". There's no need to downgrade Firefox to version 4.0. This worked for me on 4 different computers with Firefox version 26.0. Restart Firefox after installing.
Maybe David can take this file and place it somewhere on his blog where everyone can download it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I simply copied the folder from the installed Google Toolbar from the old computer to the new computer, and it worked, even more: it was copied from Windows XP to Windows 7 and it worked!!! (of course, with the other fixes I already knew from this blog).
DeleteHiya, I got the toolbar working in FF 24, 25 thanks to this post! But recently it appears that one of my favorite features of the toolbar, Word Find, does NOT work. If anyone has a solution can you please post it here?
ReplyDeleteMuy bueno!
ReplyDeleteAt the moment, it is working fine on firefox 43.0.1
ReplyDeleteSince my last posting (see January 13, 2014 posting above), I cannot get Google Toolbar to work on Firefox 48.0. I have tried just about everything, all to no avail. It seems that Mozilla has finally put the screws on Google Toolbar. They implemented a new security feature where any unsigned extension or add-on will not be installed in Firefox. It seems that Firefox will not recognize Google Toolbar as a valid add-on. If anybody out there knows a workaround to install Google Toolbar on the latest Firefox (version 48 as of this writing), please, please let me know or post here. Thank you in advance.
ReplyDeleteI admire your tenacity. I gave up long ago. It was a great tool while it lasted.
